Playing online games can significantly enhance the social skills of people with autism—a neurodevelopmental disorder—according to a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Plymouth, UK. The study engaged eight individuals with autism in the popular role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, both in person and online, to explore the potential benefits of online gaming in social skill development.
Published in the journal Autism, the study aimed to determine if placing individuals in a social setting where they felt comfortable could improve their social interactions and overall performance. The findings highlighted that online gaming in a safe and structured environment can profoundly impact social skills development.
Research Shows the Social Benefits of Online Games for People with Autism
Dr. Gray Atherton, Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Plymouth and the lead author of the study emphasized, “There are many myths and misconceptions about autism, with some of the biggest suggesting that those with it aren’t socially motivated, or don’t have any imagination. Dungeons and Dragons goes against all that, centering around working together in a team, all of which takes place in a completely imaginary environment.”
After a brief introduction to the game, the participants spent six weeks acting out various scenarios in small groups supervised by a game master. The researchers then conducted one-on-one interviews to assess how playing the game affected their social experiences and everyday lives. Many participants reported that the game provided a welcoming environment where they could openly express themselves, build rapport with others, and even incorporate traits of their in-game personas into their daily lives.
One participant mentioned, “Playing the game was like a breath of fresh air, a chance to take on a different persona and share experiences outside of an often-challenging reality.” Atherton added that this escapism made the participants feel more comfortable and confident, with many attempting to apply aspects of their in-game experiences to real-life situations.
SOG Federation’s Advocacy for Online Games and E-Sports
The SOG Federation (SOGF) has long advocated recognizing the social and cognitive benefits of online games and e-sports. As a leader in promoting skill-based online gaming in India, SOGF believes in harnessing the positive aspects of online games to improve social skills, foster teamwork, and build communities. This recent study from the University of Plymouth aligns with SOGF’s mission to highlight the potential of online gaming as a tool for personal development.
Through future events like the Indian Rummy Grandmasters and various national tournaments, SOGF aims to emphasize how online games are a source of entertainment and a platform for enhancing cognitive functions, strategic thinking, and social interaction. With a focus on creating a healthy gaming culture, the Federation aims to make online games a medium for positive social impact, especially for those with unique needs, like individuals with autism.
As this study indicates, the benefits of online gaming are far-reaching, offering individuals with autism a new way to connect, communicate, and grow socially. SOGF remains committed to fostering a greater understanding of these benefits and supporting initiatives that enhance social skills through gaming.
